The Difficult Decision of What To Do With Leftover Embryos

  • By rmami

When couples/individuals are pursuing IVF they often are hoping to create a good number of embryos. This gives them peace of mind if a cycle isn’t successful they will have additional embryos to use for another cycle. Also, if they are planning on having more children they will have embryos to utilize for subsequent cycles. However, it only takes one embryo in some cases to have success. So what happens if you have completed your family but you still have frozen embryos?

IVF Leftover Embryo

Options:

  1. Discard –Once they have decided they do not want anymore children they can choose to have their fertility clinic discard their embryos.
  2. Donate for Research – Patients can choose to donate their embryos for research purposes. However, there are only a handful of programs in the U.S. that accept them and they only accept embryos that are identified carriers of disease.
  3. Donate to Another Patient – Embryo donation is another option for patients where you would donate your leftover embryos to another patient.
  4. Keep in Storage – Patients can choose to continue to pay the yearly storage fee and keep their embryos in storage until they decide what they would like to do with them.
You can discuss these options in more detail with RMA of Michigan so that you can feel confident in whatever choice you make.
